In this project groups of three or four students will document an existing system of categories. For example, a group may choose to document the product categories that exist in a grocery store (fruits and vegetables, craving foods, ethnic foods, items that you are embarrassed to buy, upscale products, seasonal, etc.).
You will report your results back to the class. Your presentation should answer the following questions:
- What are the categories?
- What is the prototype of each category?
- What are the properties of the prototype?
- What are some typical and atypical members for each category?
- What seems to determine typicality?
-
- Do the categories overlap in members or properties?
- Do the categories have defining properties?
- Are the categories hierarchically organized?
- If so, how and what is the basic level?
- If not, how are the categories organized?
- What are other possible organizations of the items?
- What are some advantages and disadvantages of these alternative organizations?
